Why you need to know the difference between Facebook personal profiles and professional pages

Facebook is a rapidly growing online service. Facebook has 850 million active users who login for at least 30 minutes every other day. What other web site has this kind of “stickiness”? None. With that kind of stickiness, Facebook has to be part of your SEO strategy. People go to Facebook when they have nothing else to do, are bored or are just trying to catch up with their friends. I’ve heard people call Facebook a “catch up” network and I see how it earned that label.

Facebook lets you create personal profiles and professional pages. You need to understand the difference. I will present both here.

Terms of Service Facebook staff can take down a personal profile that is promoting a company, product, service, organization or cause and cite a violation of their “Terms of Service.” This is the correct avenue to promote a company, product, service, organization or cause on Facebook.

Every so often, I find someone who barged into Facebook without learning the difference. They create a personal profile that promotes a company, product, service, organization or cause. They promote that page a few months and then learn they cannot add more friends. They then frantically send messages asking friends to visit another page and “Like” that page.

That happened with the downtown Stockton, CA sports arena. I was a Facebook friend of that product and one day started receiving messages to “Like” another page for the arena. I looked at the two sites and figured out what had occurred. Sure enough, the person who first set up the arena’s Facebook presence created a personal profile for the arena. The first name was Stockton and the last name was Arena.

I hope you do not make that mistake and I hope you have not inherited that kind of mess. Here’s how you can audit your Facebook presence…look at all your pages and ask if people can connect as a Friend or if they can Like the page. If they can connect as a Friend, make sure that is your personal profile. If they can Like the page, then you are safe.
