Downloading is cheaper

Imagine this scenario. You have some extra cash and want to buy new software. You’re a small business. You can buy that software package from a big box retailer, buy the software package from an online retailer or buy a license and then download the software. Let’s explore these three options. You’ll see why buying a license and downloading the software helps you save $$

Let’s take, for example, Microsoft Office Home and Business 2010, which lists for $280.

With option 1 (big box retailer), you would pay $280, plus 8% tax ($22.40) for a total of $302.40. This does not include your time driving to the mall, finding the product, standing in line to pay and then going back to work. This license covers one computer.

With option 2 (online retailer), you would probably see a price break, but you will still pay tax and shipping. The same Microsoft Office Home and Business 2010 may cost $250, plus 8% tax ($20), plus $10 shipping, for a grand total of $280.00. You wait a few days for the product to arrive, but at least you didn’t have to stand in line anywhere. This license also covers only one computer.

With option 3 (license and download), you would see the biggest benefit. You can buy a license for two computers. The price may be $250.00 for two licenses. This averages to $125/computer. You will not pay tax or shipping. You won’t have to stand in line anywhere. You can get your software as fast as your Internet connection will permit. If you need the software again, you can simply redownload it.

The math works to your benefit.
