Sacramento SEO Pro says: Nobody knows everything…how often does your SEO guy go to conferences?

When this post appears at http://cameronparkcomputer.com/blog, I will be at a conference on search engine optimization. I spend a lot of time here bragging about my SEO successes and the successes I generate for my clients. I’m smart enough to do this and smart enough to realize I need to sharpen my saw very often. That is especially true in this rapidly changing profession. Let me ask you, how often does your Internet marketing guy attend conferences or get retraining?

  1. Once a month?
  2. Once a quarter?
  3. Once a year?
  4. Once a lifetime?

Yes, I am serious about #4. I know some people who say they can do this because they read a book or viewed a seven-minute YouTube video. I’m afraid that doesn’t cut the cake. I know some who get results on the SEO front, but their grammar is so awful that they actually embarrass themselves. They must have spent all their time studying Internet marketing and therefore never paid attention in high school English class. Sad. Sad. Sad.

Next time someone approaches you about doing their Internet marketing, ask how often they attend conferences, who they view as mentors and what success stories they can share. You may be in for a big surprise.

How to increase your Facebook page visibility

Thousands, if not millions of Facebook pages have the wrong visibility settings. You can update your settings to allow international visitors of all ages. You do that through Facebook’s Manage Permissions

box. Here’s how:

  1. Log into your Facebook account
  2. Go to the professional page you want to manage
  3. Choose Edit Page > Manage Permissions
  4. Uncheck Page Visibility (yes, the verbiage is confusing here)
  5. Leave Country Restrictions blank
  6. Set Age Restrictions to Anyone (13+)
  7. Choose Save Changes

Some people will say they want to restrict their personal information. I can subscribe to that. If that is your concern, lock down the visibility settings on your personal profile. This article is for your professional page…make sure the visibility is wide open.

Sacramento SEO Pro advises: Internet Marketing Return on Investment is cumulative

At a recent conference, one of the participants asked: “How do you measure Return on Investment with social media campaigns”? I feel that question is too narrow. You measure Return on Investment with all your marketing operations, combined. This is your cumulative Internet marketing campaign. Here’s why I say that, and you can send that hate e-mail to mark@cameronparkcomputer.com.

1. Your logo is part of your Internet marketing campaign. You paid someone to create a logo and save it in varied formats. This would include high resolution for print and embroidery as well as low resolution for web sites.

2. Your Internet domain is part of your Internet marketing campaign. If you have registered a domain and paid someone to host it, you incurred an expense. It is an investment and is designed to help you attract more business.

3. Your web site is part of your Internet marketing campaign. You wrote and gathered content for a web site. This would include original content, testimonials, pictures, movies and audio recordings. You may have created the site yourself or paid someone else to create it. If you created your site yourself, you invested your time and energy in this project. If you paid someone else to create it, you hired that person to provide their time and energy. You also wrote a check.

4. Your social media presence is part of your Internet marketing campaign. You’ve spent time learning Facebook, Google+ and LinkedIn. These services all ask you to create a profile that summarizes who you are and why people should do business with you. You can get up and running with these three services at no cost, but your time does have a value.

5. Finally, your blogging and pay-per-click operations are part of your Internet marketing campaign. Blogging helps you establish credibility by showing what you know to everyone who finds your blog. Blogging helps make you attractive to Google. You can update a blog much quicker and easier than you can update a web site. I can create a blog entry by sending an e-mail from my iPhone. Anyone out there want to edit your web site from your phone?
Now let me ask, which one variable can you measure when calculating your Return on Investment? It’s a trick question. You cannot measure just one and show causality between one variable and an increase/decrease in business. Too many factors come into play. You have a cumulative investment. When you measure how much you’ve invested in your Internet marketing campaigns, make sure you factor in all the variables I mention (above).

Sacramento SEO Pro shows how to interpret Hits vs. Pages

When reviewing your web site logs, you need to understand Hits vs. Pages. This understanding will give you an accurate picture of how much traffic a web page or web site in general, are attracting. My domain host is running Webalizer and logs both Hits and Pages. In this example, I will show how a web server records three hits while delivering one page.
A Hit is a file that you or your web browser requests. In the following example, we will see that a single page request actually generates three hits because it pulls the main page and two graphics that are part of the page (in your web browser).
A Page is the request that your computer makes. If you want to visit index.html, that is a single page request. It will appear in the server logs as one page request.
Suppose you visit a web page named index.html, which is an HTML web page that contains two graphic images, picture1.jpg, and picture2.jpg. A typical server/browser interaction might go something like this:

  • Your web browser (Firefox, Chrome, Internet Explorer, Safari, etc.) asks for the web page index.html.
  • The server sees the request and sends back index.html.
  • Your web browser finds two inline graphic links in the HTML page. It asks for the first one, picture1.jpg.
  • The server sees the request and sends back picture1.jpg.
  • Your web browser then asks for the second image, picture2.jpg.
  • The server sees the request and sends back picture2.jpg.
  • Your browser displays the web page and all included graphics.

Maybe you’ve seen this progression. If you have ever visited a web page on a slow connection, perhaps you’ve seen the page border and text without graphics. Then you wait a few seconds and the graphics eventually appear. That’s because your web browser is grabbing all the parts of the page while you watch. It’s pretty fast, but it is not instant. A lot of work happens behind the scenes before you see a complete page.
In the web server log, the following lines would appear:
67.161.163.23- – [8/May/2012:11:20:39 -0400] "GET /index.html HTTP/1.1" 200 117
67.161.163.23- – [8/May/2012:11:20:40 -0400] "GET /picture1.jpg HTTP/1.1" 200 231
67.161.163.23- – [8/May/2012:11:20:41 -0400] "GET /picture2.jpg HTTP/1.1" 200 432
The log shows very valuable information here. We see that the traffic originated at 67.161.163.23, which is a visitor’s public IP address. The visitor requested the page index.html and any linked files within index.html. This counts as one page request but three hits. Remember, the server is offering index.html, picture1.jpg and picture2.jpg. Three files are sent in response to your single page request.
When you review your web server logs, make sure you remember the difference between Hits and Pages. This can help you get an accurate reading of how much traffic your web page and site, in general, are attracting.

Sacramento SEO Pro reports – What counts as a high quality site?

Our site quality algorithms are aimed at helping people find "high-quality" sites by reducing the rankings of low-quality content. The recent "Panda" change tackles the difficult task of algorithmically assessing website quality. Taking a step back, we wanted to explain some of the ideas and research that drive the development of our algorithms.

Below are some questions that one could use to assess the "quality" of a page or an article. These are the kinds of questions we ask ourselves as we write algorithms that attempt to assess site quality. Think of it as our take at encoding what we think our users want.

Of course, we aren’t disclosing the actual ranking signals used in our algorithms because we don’t want folks to game our search results; but if you want to step into Google’s mindset, the questions below provide some guidance on how we’ve been looking at the issue:

  • Would you trust the information presented in this article?
  • Is this article written by an expert or enthusiast who knows the topic well, or is it more shallow in nature?
  • Does the site have duplicate, overlapping, or redundant articles on the same or similar topics with slightly different keyword variations?
  • Would you be comfortable giving your credit card information to this site?
  • Does this article have spelling, stylistic, or factual errors?
  • Are the topics driven by genuine interests of readers of the site, or does the site generate content by attempting to guess what might rank well in search engines?
  • Does the article provide original content or information, original reporting, original research, or original analysis?
  • Does the page provide substantial value when compared to other pages in search results?
  • How much quality control is done on content?
  • Does the article describe both sides of a story?
  • Is the site a recognized authority on its topic?
  • Is the content mass-produced by or outsourced to a large number of creators, or spread across a large network of sites, so that individual pages or sites don’t get as much attention or care?
  • Was the article edited well, or does it appear sloppy or hastily produced?
  • For a health related query, would you trust information from this site?
  • Would you recognize this site as an authoritative source when mentioned by name?
  • Does this article provide a complete or comprehensive description of the topic?
  • Does this article contain insightful analysis or interesting information that is beyond obvious?
  • Is this the sort of page you’d want to bookmark, share with a friend, or recommend?
  • Does this article have an excessive amount of ads that distract from or interfere with the main content?
  • Would you expect to see this article in a printed magazine, encyclopedia or book?
  • Are the articles short, unsubstantial, or otherwise lacking in helpful specifics?
  • Are the pages produced with great care and attention to detail vs. less attention to detail?
  • Would users complain when they see pages from this site?

Writing an algorithm to assess page or site quality is a much harder task, but we hope the questions above give some insight into how we try to write algorithms that distinguish higher-quality sites from lower-quality sites.

Say hello to Vizify

“I just created this graphical bio for myself. The way it shows off who I am is awesome! Check it out:”
That’s what you get when someone creates a graphical bio for himself or herself at Vizify.com and shares a link to the bio. Vizify is a service that pulls content from various sources including Facebook, Google+, Linkedin, Twitter and your web sites. Vizify includes pictures and presents all this information in circles. You have 11 pages of content at Vizify and I am proud to report Vizify does most of the importing work for you. Here are the pages.

  1. Overview. This shows you what Vizify pulls when it creates your profile. It presents your name and tagline. You can add additional pages and have those updates appear in your overview.
  2. Quote. A simple quote can show people a lot about you, your priorities and your view of the world. I choose: “I know this is a good idea. I thought of it during yoga.”
  3. Words. Vizify looks at your Twitter presence and presents your most popular keywords. Vizify presents circles showing when and how often you used these keywords. I can see graphically that on Twitter, I talk about Sacramento business and business more often than I talk about social media. I need to reevaluate my content on Twitter and discuss social media more.
  4. Photo. Vizify imported my Facebook personal profile photo and caption I wrote when I first uploaded the photo to Facebook.
  5. Photo (again). Vizify uploaded another Facebook photo. This one is a picture I took of a very beautiful sunset.
  6. Locations…the paces I’ve called home. Vizify looks at your birth, education and job history and plots all those on a map. When you first visit this page, Vizify runs a short movie showing your progression. Mine starts at Chicago and follows my steps, progressing to East Lansing, MI and then to Cameron Park, CA.
  7. Experience. Vizify shows how long you’ve been working.
  8. Career. Vizify shows your career growth by showing your education and employers.
  9. Education. Vizify shows my high school and college graduation dates.
  10. Links. Vizify shows how people can find you on the Internet. I have multiple blogs and web sites in addition to a presence at Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn and Twitter.
  11. Photo. On the last and final page, Vizify presents an additional photo. This is the professional photo I am promoting at several sites including my Facebook professional pages, Google+ and LinkedIn.

Altogether, I love it. Vizify shows the information people need when they want to learn about you but don’t have much time. You can create new pages to meet your desires. Vizify is available at no cost at http://vizify.com. My profile is at https://www.vizify.com/mark-anthony-germanos.
